The motherland’s own punk feminist collective, Pussy Riot, is playing Powerhouse Arts on Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:00 pm. Accompanied by Moor Mother, an American poet and musician, Pussy Riot will be performing what is sure to be an act of defiance. Known for their guerrilla-style protest art, this collective will force you to confront themes of anti-authoritarianism, human rights, and gender equality. This group doesn’t shy away from anything, having gained worldwide notoriety from their 2012 performance at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. “Punk Protest” criticized the church’s support of Putin, leading to several members’ arrest. Pussy Riot is known for their chant-style lyrics with songs like “I Can’t Breathe” and “Refugees.” Their work is meant to intentionally make you think. No polish and all feeling. Fueled by a need to disrupt, their work exemplifies the punk art form. From taking over public spaces to NFTs, this group will do whatever it takes to get their point across.
