Public Meetings Set As Texas Gas Service Proposes Higher Rates In El Paso

The Texas Gas Service wants to hike El Paso gas bills by 27%. El Paso city council made them organize several meetings to explain and let us tell them what we think.

Ok, I think I know what you think. I can probably speak for El Paso as a whole on this one but I’ll stick with my own thoughts here and say, simply, I’m against it. It sounds like they just want a standard rate across Texas and that’s not right.

Or maybe, thanks to our fairly mild winters, we’re just not using enough so they want to give themselves a boost. I don’t know, hopefully these meetings will explain that.

The city of El Paso is calling for these meetings so Texas Gas Service can explain themselves. City council members seem to feel as I do and don’t want to see us on a “standard rate”.

City officials and financial experts alike don’t seem to like it either and directed Texas Gas Service to hold open meetings on the matter.

“These meetings are intended to give El Pasoans an opportunity to hear directly from TGS representatives and learn more about the company’s pending rate case before the City’s public hearing later this month,” a city spokesperson explained. – KVIA

City Attorney Karla Nieman said that “rate changes must be fair, transparent, and based on the actual cost of providing service in El Paso – not on costs from other regions.”

The city of El Paso urged Texas Gas Service to hold public meetings to explain all this and answer El Pasoans questions. You can view the schedule here or in the Instagram post above. The Railroad Commission of Texas will have the final say on this and should decide in January, 2026. El Pasoans are strongly urged to attend these meetings, ask questions, air grievances and make your/our voices heard.
