LAWRENCE — A new, interim leader of The Psychological Center was named after the abrupt recent departure of Carina Pappalardo, its chief executive officer for nearly a decade.
The center announced the move late Monday afternoon, saying Holly Howes would be the interim executive director “effective immediately.”
The announcement came after The Eagle-Tribune questioned numerous center employees and affiliates regarding Pappalardo’s employment status.
The Psychological Center is a registered nonprofit that assists people experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental-health challenges.
“Howes brings extensive leadership experience to the role, most recently serving as Human Resources Director at Comfort Home Care. She is also a former member of the TPC board of directors,” according to a press release.
On Aug. 7, the center revealed Pappalardo was no longer with the organization.
“TPC wishes her well in her future endeavors,” officials wrote in a press release.
Both the Aug. 7 and the Monday press releases were issued by John Guilfoil Public Relations in Groveland.
Pappalardo’s name and contact information was immediately removed from the TPC website. Information about the organization’s board of directors is also missing.
According to Monday’s press release, Howes has a strong background in leadership, change management, and organizational development. She is recognized for her “people first” philosophy and commitment to building strong, collaborative teams.
“I am honored to return to The Psychological Center in this capacity,” she said in the statement. “I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, supporting the incredible programs we offer, and ensuring that every employee feels heard, valued, and supported.”
In her role, Howes said she is “committed to upholding the importance of TPC’s mission and the work done for those served, creating a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment, and ensuring employees feel recognized and supported in their roles.”
The center has been providing mental health and recovery services in Greater Lawrence since 1971. The organization runs the Daybreak homeless shelter, and Women’s View and Pegasus recovery homes, all in Lawrence.
In late May while under Pappalardo’s direction, the center announced $32,000 collected through a “Mardi Gras Derby” fundraiser would be used to help relocate Women’s View to a “new, improved and more accessible home in Methuen.”
“Thanks to our supporters, 15 women at a time will now have the chance to heal in a modern, calming space designed for dignity, growth, and long-term recovery,” Pappalardo said in a press release issued at that time.
Pappalardo joined the center in 2011 as director of human resources and operations. She was named CEO in February 2016.
She could not be reached for comment for this article.
Howes will be based at the center’s Union Street office. She said she encourages staff, partners, and community members to connect with her. She can be reached directly at [email protected].
“We are thrilled to welcome Holly into this leadership role,” said Penny Hamel, president of the board of directors, in a press release.
“Her vision, experience, and passion for our mission make her the right leader for this important time at The Psychological Center,” Hamel said.
