A prison transportation vehicle was involved in a crash on the way to Liverpool’s court building. The incident, which happened this morning, Wednesday, involved a GEOAmey prison transportation on its way from HMP Altcourse to Liverpool’s Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts.
The location of the crash is unknown, but the ECHO understands the incident resulted in a number of remand prisoners not appearing at court for proceedings. Contacts at the court building told the ECHO that by midday prisoners had still not arrived.
Those on board the van during the crash were transferred to a different vehicle and made their way on to Liverpool Single Justice Centre where they were assessed for their injuries.
GEOAmey, which provides prisoner transport for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), confirmed there were no serious injuries in the incident.
A GEOAmey spokesperson told the ECHO: “Whilst en route to HMP Altcourse this morning, a vehicle crashed into the back of a GEOAmey van.
“Following the accident, the vehicle made its way to HMP Altcourse where all those on board were transferred to another vehicle and made their way to Liverpool Single Justice Centre where they were assessed by the onsite paramedic.
“GEOAmey takes the safety of our colleagues and those we transport very seriously, and we are pleased that there were no significant injuries as a result of this accident.”
Merseyside Police said it was not aware of the incident when asked by the ECHO this afternoon. Sodexo, which privately operates Altcourse prison, and the MoJ were both also approached for comment.
According to GEOAmey’s website, it connects the criminal justice system by interacting with police services, crown prosecutors, the courts and tribunal services and the prison services.
The company said it plans and undertakes the routes between prisons, police stations, courts and hospitals and organises the officers in court docks and custody suites.
GEOAmey said it undertakes 8,500 movements every week as part of its MoJ contact.
