The Premier League have explained the decision to show Sunderland defender Reinildo a red card for violent conduct against Aston Villa.
Sunderland were reduced to ten men in the 33rd minute after VAR intervened to confirm referee Sam Barrott’s decision to show the 31-year-old a straight red card.
Reinildo kicked out at Villa defender Matt Cash after he was shoved to the ground during the goalless first-half at the Stadium of Light.
The summer signing from Atletico Madrid was furious after Cash bundled him to the ground, kicking towards Cash’s stomach and sensitive region.
Barrott produced the red card to Reinildo, who attempted to plead his innocence. VAR then confirmed the decision after a brief check.
The Premier League posted an explanation of the incident and subsequent decision on X, saying: “The referee’s call of red card to Reinildo for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact on Cash deemed to be a clear violent action with his studs.”
