B.C.’s independent police watchdog is looking for witnesses for its investigation into an incident involving Nanaimo RCMP in which four people were injured.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. – the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia – opened an investigation after an officer driving a marked police vehicle attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a motorcycle at about 11:40 p.m. on April 26.

According to an IIO report issued Monday, Dec. 1, the motorcycle, ridden by two male youths, was subsequently involved in a collision with a taxi occupied by a man and woman near the intersection of Victoria Road and Milton Street.

The two taxi occupants were not seriously injured, but both youths on the motorcycle were seriously hurt.

Canvassing and interviews of all identified witnesses are completed, as well as interviews with officers and other professionals who attended the scene and the IIO is awaiting reports from specialist services that have been engaged to analyze evidence and provide more information, the release noted.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to an IIO investigator are asked to call 1-855-446-8477 or e-mail to [email protected].
