CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) released the charges that led to the arrest of theMcBee police Department captain and a woman in Chesterfield County.
According to SLED warrants, the charges stem from an October 2024 incident where Janece Jorden Curtiss took a child to a hospital for injuries she said were obtained when the child “fell into the refrigerator.”
Medical staff who examined the child determined that the injuries could have been obtained from a sexual abuse situation. At that time, they contacted the McBee Pole Department (MPD) and the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS).
Curtiss told MPD Captain Gregory P. Block, who responded, that a “registered sex offender lived [redacted] and was loitering around.”
“In Capt. Block’s initial call to DSS, he reported Curtiss left [the child] home alone at the time of the incident, Curtiss was trying to coach [the child] on what to say, medical personnel told him the injuries were not consistent with Curtiss’ explanation, and requested DSS to respond,” SLED warrants said.
The medical staff at the hospital told a secondary medical center that the child was going to be sent over for a sedated exam to assess for the possibility of sexual assault.
Block was informed by the staff member about the concerns of sexual misconduct, and the child was discharged under the exception that Block and Curtiss were transporting the child for additional treatment.

SLED warrants said that less than an hour after the child was discharged, Block called DSS to change his statement and said “the injuries that the doctor put on his report and sent to her were consistent” with Curtiss’ explanation, despite medical staff advising him otherwise.
He assured DSS that he would conduct an investigation into the child’s situation.
“Block created an MPD incident report… that contained a false statement and partial information that was misleading,” SLED explained.
Four days after the initial hospital visit, Curtiss took the child to a doctor with complaints of pain, bloody urine, and other symptoms.
Following the visit, Block told the physician he did not suspect sexual assault but would schedule a forensic interview with the child to investigate.
SLED noted that Block and Curtiss began a sexual relationship following the incident.
SLED investigators determined the child was not taken for a secondary exam, as was advised during the initial hospital visit and no forensic interview was scheduled with the child.
In July of 2025, DSS opened an investigation into the incident. Curtiss refused to bring the child in for forensic interviews as part of the investigation.
On July 28, Curtiss called and requested that a physician change the child’s medical records to “conclude no evidence of possible sexual assault.”
Block, 40, was charged with misconduct in office and obstruction of justice.
Curtiss, 34, was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child and obstruction of justice.
Both Block and Curtiss were booked into the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
The town of McBee issued a statement following Block’s arrest:
“The Town of McBee is aware of the recent charges involving one of its police officers and takes the matter very seriously. The officer has been suspended without pay. We remain committed to transparency, we intend to continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement, and the Town will share updates as appropriate.”
The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
