ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the urgent need to modernize Pakistan’s civil service system by aligning it with global standards of public service and integrating modern technology. Chairing a meeting on civil service reforms, he stated that the bureaucracy plays a vital role in implementing government policies and ensuring efficiency across departments. He called for inclusive reforms, urging input from public representatives and civil servants alike.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal briefed the Prime Minister on proposed reforms. He highlighted existing gaps in recruitment, training, and promotion systems, and stressed the need to boost the capacity and skills of public officials. The Prime Minister reaffirmed that comprehensive civil service reform remains a top government priority.
In a separate meeting on electric vehicles (EVs), PM Shehbaz announced several steps to promote clean transportation. He said increasing the use of EVs will help save valuable foreign exchange spent on fuel, protect the environment, and support local industry. He directed authorities to prepare a detailed action plan to make EVs more affordable and accessible for the general public.
The Prime Minister revealed that top-performing students from all education boards, including the Federal Board, will be awarded electric bikes (e-bikes). In addition, unemployed citizens will be given priority access to electric rickshaws and loaders through a subsidized loan scheme. A third-party verification system will ensure transparency in the distribution process.
The government plans to deliver over 100,000 e-bikes and 300,000 electric loaders at low cost and easy loan terms. A special 25% quota has been reserved for women, and students at the intermediate level showing exceptional performance will receive free e-bikes. The Prime Minister also ordered the quota for Balochistan to be increased to 10%. The initiative is expected to boost local manufacturing, as four new battery production companies are now preparing to launch operations in Pakistan.
