SEOUL, June 16 (Yonhap) — Prime Minister nominee Kim Min-seok on Monday began receiving briefings from economy-related ministries to better prepare for his confirmation hearings.
The briefings will be held over two days until Tuesday and focus on issues related to the economy and people’s livelihood matters.
Kim said in his opening remarks that he plans to discuss five main issues, starting with the “breadth, depth and true nature of the current economic crisis,” which he has likened to the financial crisis of 1997.
He said he plans to check the progress of each ministry on identifying policies that are tangible and realizable within 100 days in line with President Lee Jae-myung’s instructions.
“Over the past three years the Republic of Korea has regressed,” he said, referring to the administration of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol. “In order to fix the regression of those three years, we need to run at full speed for at least the next 100 days.”
In addition, Kim said he plans to check whether there are systems in place to gather the views of the people and rival political parties and reflect them in the government’s policies, while monitoring progress on urgent measures to revive people’s livelihoods and control rising food prices.
The final subject, he said, will be whether each ministry has been fleshing out the president’s orders from his first days in office, such as the recent order to punish activists’ sending of propaganda leaflets into North Korea.
