Kenjgewin Teg introducing course in conjunction with Canadore College
Kenjgewin Teg hopes to meet demand for plumbing expertise on Manitoulin Island by offering a new course to train skilled plumbers.
Partnering with Canadore College, the institute will offer the Mechanical Techniques – Plumbing program at its M’Chigeeng campus starting in the fall of 2026.
Introducing the course is a direct response to a rise in need for plumbers in the area, said the institute, citing a shortage of skilled workers, combined with a rise in service calls and an increase in new construction.
The 28-week course will give learners a foundation in plumbing techniques, including learning essential math and English skills; Plumbing Theory I, II, and III; and hands-on experience in Plumbing Practice I, II, and III.
Students will use trade-specific materials and tools, learn plumbing installation and repair techniques, learn how to read blueprints, and become familiar with the Ontario Plumbing Code.
Graduates will have the skills to work in residential, commercial or industrial plumbing environments.
Registration is open until Aug. 21.
Kenjgewin Teg has added a number of trades training opportunities in recent years, following the 2019 completion of its Anishinabek Skills, Innovation and Research Centre and establishing a number of public and private training partnerships.
