PARMA, Ohio — Pleasant Valley Elementary School’s Guys with Ties is a popular mentorship program focusing on character, life skills, etiquette (handshakes, eye contact, manners) and leadership.

They use ties as symbols of professionalism, teaching boys to be gentlemen through activities, guest speakers and community service.

The end results boost self-confidence and self-respect.

Guys with Ties is about introducing professionalism and confidence at an age-appropriate level.

As a guest speaker discussing goal setting, Parma City School District’s Superintendent Scott Hunt last month visited third-graders at the Pleasant Valley Road building.

“I had the great opportunity to speak with them about dreaming big, setting goals to reach those dreams, knowing that making mistakes is OK and part of learning and the importance of being resilient if you do fail it something,” he said.

Hurricane mini-cheer camp: Brooklyn City School PreK-6 students are invited to show off their cheer skills at an upcoming mini-camp taking place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 15-16 in the Brooklyn High School cafeteria.

Campers will learn one dance and one cheer along with the Brooklyn High School basketball cheer team.

The students will perform their routines during halftime of the Jan. 17 JV game.

The cost is $40, which includes a t-shirt and after-performance refreshments.

The online registration deadline is Jan. 8.

Parma Area Senior Veterans seeks volunteers: The Parma chapter of Senior Veterans of America Inc relies on a small team of dedicated volunteers to help guide programs, outreach and growth.

The local group is currently seeking volunteers to join its admin committee, which meets monthly.

Participant ideas, support and leadership help ensure senior veterans receive the recognition, connection and respect they deserve.

Information, please: Readers are invited to share information about themselves, their families and friends, organizations, church events, etc. in Brooklyn, Independence, Parma, Parma Heights and Seven Hills for the Sun Postings column, which I write on a freelance basis. Awards, honors, milestone birthdays or anniversaries and other items are welcome. Submit information at least 10 days before the requested publication date to [email protected].
