PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A nonprofit is finding a new purpose for used toys and books, and that’s Something Good!
Jenna Hubaishy and Ben Mertens enjoy thrifting and upcycling. One day, they were browsing through Facebook Marketplace when they came across some American Girl dolls for sale.
They decided to fix it up and donate it, which soon inspired them to create PHX Doll House. The nonprofit collects used toys and books from garage sales, thrift stores, consignment shops and donations.
“We take them, refurbish them, clean them up a bit and then give them straight to kids,” said Ben Mertens, chief operating manager of PHX Doll House.
The toys are also repackaged, allowing kids to experience the thrill of opening a brand-new toy.
Since March, Ben and Jenna have given away hundreds of toys. “I feel like I get to be Santa (Claus) every day,” said Jenna.
They are currently partnering with various organizations, including Big Brothers and Sisters, as well as the Department of Child Safety, to distribute the donations and hope to create more partnerships throughout the Valley.
PHX Doll House has received a great response from the community and is also accepting donations. To learn more, click/tap here.
