SEN. Bong Go praised the newly expanded kidney transplant benefit package of the Philippine Health Insuranc Corp. (PhilHealth), adding reforms within the state health insurer must continue for the benefit of underprivileged Filipinos.
The updated policy has increased financial coverage for kidney transplants from P600,000 to P2.1 million.
Support for dialysis has also been boosted to nearly P1 million per patient, now encompassing vital laboratory tests and maintenance medications — elements that frequently strain families financially.
PhilHealth President and CEO Edwin Mercado said the expanded coverage was supported by the agency’s corporate operating budget. It was designed to provide kidney transplant recipients continuous access to medications and post-operative care.
Go urged PhilHealth, the Department of Health and local government units to coordinate in monitoring the program’s rollout to make sure that it would benefit the poor. “If there is a benefit this big, let Filipinos know, especially the poor,” he said.
