Party urges deregulation to boost private redevelopment, criticizes public supply focus
The People Power Party on the 1st criticized President Lee Jae Myung, stating, “Threats cannot stabilize housing prices.” This followed the president’s social media (SNS) remarks directed at multiple-homeowners, where he said, “Do not oppose government policies and suffer losses” and “This is the last chance to settle.”
Chief Spokesperson Choi Bo-yun of the People Power Party stated in a commentary the same day, “The president’s attitude of swaying public opinion with provocative slogans is highly inappropriate,” adding, “Above all, owning real estate itself is not a crime.” She continued, “Approaches that drive housing choices and asset formation into targets of crackdowns cannot resolve overheated housing prices.”
The People Power Party also criticized the president’s repeated messages urging multiple-homeowners to “settle.”
Regarding this, Spokesperson Choi said, “The president has unilaterally attributed the cause of overheated housing prices to illegal activities and even resorted to threatening expressions targeting homeowners.”
She added, “During the government’s June 27 mortgage regulations, the president boldly claimed, ‘This regulation is just a taste,’ but as housing prices remained unstable, he now mentions a ‘last chance.'” She criticized, “Rather than calmly explaining policies, the administration is fostering fear.”
Regarding the government’s recently announced real estate supply measures, Spokesperson Choi stated, “The issue of overheated housing prices in the capital region cannot be resolved through public supply alone.” She emphasized, “The fastest and most realistic solution is revitalizing private-led redevelopment and reconstruction through deregulation.”
The People Power Party pointed out that 19,300 out of the 28,600 households in the newly announced public sites in Seoul were candidate locations from the Moon Jae-in administration’s August 4 measures. These sites, which had previously stalled due to resident opposition or infrastructure issues, were repackaged as new supply.
In relation, Spokesperson Choi criticized, “The government is clinging to the idea of gathering idle land while blocking the solutions that are truly needed.” She added, “This is no different from telling the public to accept government-assigned real estate quotas.”
Former lawmaker Yoon Hee-sook, who previously chaired the party’s innovation committee, stated, “The most urgent task to stabilize the real estate market is for the ‘nation-destroying real estate Taliban’ to reflect.” She urged, “The government should stop its pointless stubbornness and withdraw the October 15 measures immediately.”
