PDP NEC approves Anyanwu’s reinstatement as national secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at the 100th meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday, approved the reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.

Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting — about which so much rancour has been generated in the last few weeks — Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, disclosed that the next meeting of NEC would take place on the 23rd of July, 2025, to discuss the issue of the party’s national convention.

“As you can see, we just rose from our 100th NEC meeting. This meeting was a one-agenda meeting, which was to discuss the outcome of our interaction with INEC with regard to the National Secretary. We all combined in one effort. We were all together, and we all agreed that Senator Anyanwu will continue to act as National Secretary,” Damagum stated.

He said the meeting also agreed to bring the issue of convention to the next NEC, which is slated for 23 July.

He added, “At that time, we will be able to convene a proper NEC where myself and Senator Anyanwu will sign notice to fulfil regulatory need of INEC in convening meetings.”

Damagum also disclosed that the party has been able to achieve a high level of reconciliation during the meeting.

“So, to our detractors who thought this meeting would be rancorous and maybe the end of the party, we have disappointed them. This is the beauty of PDP, the only party in this country that knows the mechanism to solve its own problems rancour-free.

“You can see all our governors have attended the meeting, all members of NWC, we are on the same page. You will not be seeing all these press releases and counter-press releases any more,” he added.

Also speaking, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, expressed delight about the reconciliation.

He said, “This is a miracle of the PDP, the party that has history, that has the pedigree and the human capital to deliver Nigeria. We have been engrossed in controversies and challenges, not created by us, but created for us, and we have been navigating, unlike the other parties, irrespective of the manifestations and the perceptions there.”

According to him, the news of people leaving the party are all cosmetic. It was all created to diminish us. But I must thank the leaders of all the organs of the party, especially the BoT, the caucuses of the National Assembly, and most important, my colleagues and the NWC, because everything we are doing, we are doing for the NWC today. I must tell the world that the NWC has collapsed all differences, all wranglings.

He said, “They met before this meeting. What you have been seeing in terms of press releases has stopped and you will not see them again. And that is what the BoT Chairman is telling you. We are all on the same page — no excuse for coalition, no excuse to form any stakeholders’ meeting other than that of the NWC.”

At the meeting were Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, and Mustwang Caleb of Plateau State.

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Anyanwu were, however, absent from the meeting.
