Chip-based e-passports are soon to be introduced in India. This technological upgrade is designed to improve security and speed up immigration checks at airports. The new e-passports will feature biometric details and fully comply with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) global standards.

The Passport Seva Program 2.0 is being implemented across the country, incorporating advanced and emerging technologies to enhance transparency and speed up operations. The Global Passport Seva Program 2.0 is currently undergoing testing and will be rolled out gradually in Indian embassies and consulates in a phased manner.

An e-passport is a unique travel document that contains a contactless chip, typically embedded in the back or front cover of the passport. This chip dramatically streamlines airport immigration and travel processes. You can easily identify an e-passport by the gold-colored chip logo printed on its front cover.

The e-passport is designed in accordance with global regulations (ICAO).

It comes with advanced technological upgrades that make it more secure.

It has a small electronic chip embedded in its front cover.

This chip contains important biometric information, such as your fingerprint, your photo, and eye scans.

It also securely stores your personal details, such as your name and passport number.

This chip works without any contact and transmits information securely.

Applying for an e-passport is similar to applying for a regular passport, but involves more security verification. First, you need to visit the official Passport Seva website. Here, you need to create a new user profile or log in. Then, carefully fill out the e-passport application form.

Next, select the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) nearest you. Pay the prescribed application fee online. Book an appointment at the selected Seva Kendra. Visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date for biometric capture and document verification. This new digital initiative will pave the way for safer and faster global travel for Indian citizens.
