Under the arrangement, millions of customers with compatible smartphones will be able to connect directly to low-Earth-orbit satellites without relying solely on traditional mobile towers to access crypto services.

Airtel Africa has outlined a bold strategic roadmap that spans connectivity, fintech, and emerging technologies across its 14-market footprint in sub-Saharan Africa.

The pan-African telecom operator is advancing plans to list its mobile money business publicly, deepen its partnership with Starlink satellite services, and explore crypto-related offerings to fuel growth in digital payments and connectivity.

Airtel Africa has re-affirmed that preparations to take its mobile money unit public are on track. Management is actively evaluating the best location to list the business, aiming to unlock additional value and capital for expansion.

This move comes as digital payments continue to grow rapidly across Africa supported by

The potential IPO follows a broader trend among African telcos to monetise their fintech arms reflecting the strategic importance of mobile money in driving customer engagement, remittances, lending, and other digital financial services across diverse markets.

A key pillar of Airtel’s strategy is its partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to bring satellite-enabled connectivity to underserved and rural regions across Africa. Airtel Africa has entered into agreements to deploy Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell satellite service in all 14 of its markets, including Nigeria, Kenya, and others where terrestrial network coverage is limited.

Under the arrangement, millions of customers with compatible smartphones will be able to connect directly to low-Earth-orbit satellites without relying solely on traditional mobile towers. The initial commercial roll-out is expected in 2026, starting with text messaging and selected data access. Advanced phases will introduce broadband-grade connectivity with significantly higher speeds up to 20× faster data performance as next-generation satellite technology comes online.

Airtel says the Starlink Direct-to-Cell service will complement its existing terrestrial infrastructure helping bridge the digital divide in deep rural communities and areas where laying fibre or building towers is cost-prohibitive. The partnership also enhances network resilience by providing backup connectivity during terrestrial outages.

Alongside connectivity and fintech, Airtel is open to integrating virtual asset services such as stablecoins and other cryptocurrency products into its offerings based on customer demand. While no firm launch timeline has been announced, company leaders have indicated that they are watching market trends and regulatory developments closely, particularly in countries formalising crypto oversight.

This openness to crypto comes as several African markets such as Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria work on regulatory frameworks for digital assets, creating potential opportunities for telcos to embed crypto services in mobile money ecosystems where demand for cross-border payments and financial innovation remains strong.

Airtel Africa’s move comes after AfriCell, the only mainstream U.S-owned mobile network operator in Africa, announced their intent to collaborate on blockchain education, crypto literacy, and digital asset services across in Africa.

AfriCell’s Head of Business Development, Nidal Safetli, said:

“Partnering with Binance allows us to bring global blockchain expertise into our local ecosystem. Together we aim to equip communities with the knowledge, technical skills and tools to participate confidently in the digital financial economy.”

Airtel Africa’s strategy reflects its efforts to defend market share and accelerate growth in competitive markets dominated by robust mobile money and data ecosystems. In Kenya, for example, Airtel’s market position, though smaller than the incumbent, underscores the importance of expanding both its connectivity reach and value-added services to attract new users and retain existing ones.

The combination of mobile money monetisation, satellite connectivity, and crypto-enabled financial products positions Airtel to harness multiple growth vectors. This multi-pronged strategy aims not only to enhance customer value but also to build future-ready infrastructure that supports Africa’s digital economy.
