And in this glamorous, sometimes absurd world of appearances, socialite and writer Shobhaa De recently gave fans a peek behind the paparazzi curtain. Known for her sharp observations on society and showbiz, De spoke about one phenomenon that has quietly become a staple of Hindi cinema: the airport photo op.
In a recent conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story, Shobhaa didn’t hold back. She revealed that paparazzi aren’t just wandering around hoping for a glimpse of a star. They are carefully summoned. “There is a set of airport paparazzi who are on speed dial with the managers of the stars,” she said emphasizing that what appears spontaneous is often meticulously orchestrated.

Once upon a time, stars felt approachable. “Actors in those days used to have secretaries. You could talk to the secretary and set up interviews and photo shoots. It was straightforward,” Shobhaa recalled.
Today, she explains, things have changed dramatically. The Bollywood star experience has become corporatized following a model closer to Hollywood. Stylists, managers, and brand partnerships now play a huge role in shaping how stars present themselves, and airports have turned into a stage for this carefully curated image-making.
“The airport look and all of it is carefully planned. Stylists are working, big brands are involved, it’s commerce-driven. If you’re not getting clicked at the airport, you’re virtually invisible,” Shobhaa added.
The revelation doesn’t stop there. Shobhaa disclosed that some young stars create airport moments even without catching flights. They arrive with luggage, often in an Uber rather than a plane, stand at the departure gate, and have their staff click photos to circulate in the media. It’s a modern twist on celebrity life: appearances and image often matter more than the journey itself.
This isn’t just speculation. The paparazzi culture in Bollywood has intensified over the years. Celebrities are chased from airports to restaurants, from gyms to private homes. Earlier, actress Vidya Balan, in a candid chat with journalist Faye D’souza, shared how the early days of airport appearances made her anxious. “I would literally pray that the photographers are not there. I would duck into my car so they don’t spot me,” she admitted. Over time, she has learned to embrace the attention, choosing comfort over perfection. “It comes with age and experience… like, whatever. Take it or leave it,” she said.

Deepika Padukone, for instance, frequently turns heads in Louis Vuitton from head to toe, while Kareena Kapoor Khan sports co-ord sets from Puma, turning even a simple airport walk into a brand showcase.
