Recently, I switched back to using Linux to escape Windows 11’s insane AI intrusions. But I also fired up my MacBook Pro to give macOS another run as well. This was the time to try Orion Browser. Orion Browser is built by the search company, Kagi. I switched to Kagi Search a while back, and I absolutely love it and recommend it even though it will cost you a monthly fee. But it’s currently not available on Windows and just went into beta for Linux. So I installed the browser on my MacBook Pro, and this is my short review.

I ditched Chrome on Windows years ago in favor of Firefox. I did that because I wanted to disconnect some of my digital life from Google. Not only that, but I wanted to go deeper and find a different search engine as well, which led me to Kagi Search. When I switched to Kagi, I discovered the company also had a web browser, but because I was using Windows, I couldn’t use it. Now that I am using my MacBook again, I decided to give Orion Browser a run, and I would recommend Mac users give this browser a try.
The bottom line. If you’re looking for privacy and don’t want to use Chrome or Safari, then Orion Browser is a great alternative. Kagi Search is built into this browser, but you can change it to whatever you want. This browser is fast and doesn’t use a ton of resources and has a ton of nice features. Once it’s ready for Windows, I will be switching from Zen Browser on all of my Windows machines. Orion browser is free, so you don’t have much to lose by trying it.

Orion Browser by Kagi is a WebKit-based browser designed to combine the performance and energy efficiency of Safari with the extensive power and extensibility of Chrome and Firefox. Developed by Kagi Inc., it differentiates itself by adhering to a strict “zero-telemetry” policy, ensuring that no user data is collected or sent to the company’s servers.
The browser is natively optimized for the Apple ecosystem — including macOS, iOS, and iPadOS — allowing it to outperform Chromium-based browsers in speed and battery consumption. It also offers advanced features like vertical tabs, a built-in ad blocker, and the unique ability to run both Chrome and Firefox extensions.
I’m glad I broke out my M1 MacBook Pro after several years. Orion Browser runs so much better than either Gecko-based or Chromium-based browsers on Mac because it’s built on WebKit. This browser also has a ton of great features, far more than I listed here, that can be useful for users. I’d recommend Mac users at least try Orion Browser, and if you like it, consider paying the subscription for Kagi Search.
