AIKEN — During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Southeast Asia was the site of the longest armed conflict in the history of the American military.
USC Aiken is documenting the experiences of some of those involved in the fighting through the Vietnam Veterans Oral History Project.
The effort was the subject of a presentation to the Rotary Club of Aiken on Oct. 20 at Newberry Hall.
Faculty and students are working together as a team. Its leaders are Dr. Sarah King, an assistant professor of history, and Dr. David Morris, an associate professor of emerging media.
The project is in the second of its three years. During the first year, 10 veterans were interviewed, and plans call for 10 more per year to be interviewed using professional level audio and video equipment in USCA’s Media Learning and Research Lab.
During the interviews, veterans are asked to provide background information and to discuss their basic and advanced training.
In addition, they answer questions about their time in Vietnam and their life after the war.
The veterans’ stories will be featured at vvohp.org.
USCA is seeking donors to help fund the project, which will have a total cost of $45,000, or $15,000 per year.
For information about making a donation, call Kayleigh Huggins in the USCA Advancement Office at 803-641-3417.
