OpenSea is developing an update to its NFT platform, advancing to version 2.0, which will feature an enhanced user interface and improved asset differentiation. This was announced by the marketplace’s founder, Devin Finzer, in a conversation with Bloomberg.
According to him, the industry should move beyond focusing solely on sales figures and viewing tokens merely as collectible images.
“One of the things that concerned us the most wasn’t necessarily how to achieve maximum volume, but rather how to create the most compelling use cases for NFTs,” stated the head of OpenSea.
Once the undisputed market leader, OpenSea has recently been surpassed in trading volumes not only by Blur but also by platforms from OKX and Magic Eden over the past 30 days.
However, Finzer believes that “volumes can sometimes be misleading,” as some marketplaces stimulate activity through rewards in their own tokens.
Instead, OpenSea aims to enhance the differentiation of collectible assets, offering users a more refined experience with NFTs.
Finzer noted that the update will make it easier for clients to access the marketplace’s professional features. The upgrade will also improve the detection of fake NFT collections and malicious phishing URLs, which have become a problem in the sector.
Regarding emerging trends, the OpenSea founder highlighted the growth of the non-fungible token market on Solana and the popularity of Bitcoin Ordinals. However, Finzer is most optimistic about Ethereum as the primary base for NFT development. In his view, second-layer solutions play a special role here, offering cheaper and faster transactions.
Back in November 2023, OpenSea announced a 50% reduction in its workforce. The Blur token appreciated by 33% in response.
