The NWRA warmly welcomes the commencement of the Atlantic Technological University’s (ATU) STEM Building in Galway City and its Library, IT, and Education Building in Letterkenny. These projects were announced by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD.

The NWRA has strongly advocated for their delivery in recent years, with these two infrastructure projects included in our Briefing document on the National Development Plan (NDP) review out of total of 33 projects which informed our recent submission on the review of the National Development Plan.

Speaking about the announcement, acting Director Conall McGettigan said:

“The NWRA recognises the critical role the ATU plays in strengthening the region’s capacity to attract and retain talent, support innovation, and foster inclusive economic growth. The NWRA also acknowledges the leadership of ATU President Orla Flynn and the university’s Capital Development team in advancing these ambitious projects. As construction begins, the Assembly looks forward to the positive impact these facilities will have on learners, educators, researchers and the wider community across the region”.

Acting Assistant Director and Senior Planner, Tanya Whyte said:

“These buildings will not only enhance the student experience at ATU but also reinforce the region’s position as a hub for knowledge, innovation, and opportunity which supports the delivery of the Regional Policy Objectives in the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy. We commend the collaborative efforts of the Higher Education Authority, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and the National Development Finance Agency in bringing these projects to fruition”.

The Galway campus will benefit from a new state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, Mathematics) building to be located on the east side of the Galway City campus, facing the Ballybane Road. The 5,500 m² building will provide additional teaching, learning and laboratory space in STEM disciplines, predominantly serving Engineering, Science and Computing.

The Donegal Letterkenny campus will gain a new 5,100m building, comprising a new state-of-the-art library, computer laboratories, classrooms, lecture theatre, staff office accommodation and extended dining facilities. The project also includes a new through-campus pedestrian and cycleway.

These investments are part of the Higher Education Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme, a national initiative delivering 11 new STEM facilities across Ireland.

For further information on this announcement, view the Press Releases by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and the ATU.
