The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), Mr. Kamar Bakrin, has said ongoing reforms at the Nigerian Sugar Institute (NSI) are aimed at eliminating the country’s sugar production deficit.
Bakrin made this known during a recent interview with journalists, where he dismissed what he described as widespread misconceptions surrounding the Federal Government’s policies in the sugar sector.
He explained that the Nigerian Sugar Institute was conceived as a shared, industry-wide platform designed to bring research, manpower development, and technical support under one national hub.
According to him, the Institute serves as the central research and capacity-building institution for the sugar industry, operating under the strategic oversight of the NSDC.
“The Nigerian Sugar Institute is a purpose-built national institution established to serve as the research, training, and technical backbone of Nigeria’s sugar industry,” Bakrin said.
“It exists to ensure consistent access to quality planting materials, skilled manpower, and credible technical expertise for the industry, ultimately strengthening local sugar production and closing existing gaps,” he added.
