Richard Kwadwo Adu, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the party’s electoral fortunes in 2028 depend largely on a national leadership with dynamism, and not just a flagbearer.
In his view, the NPP presently requires a national chairman with a strong grassroots support base, like Ambassador Edward Boateng, Ghana’s former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the People’s Republic of China, to lead and turn around and enhance the electoral fortunes of the party in the 2028 Election.
Interacting with a section of the media in Sunyani on the NPP’s 2026 Presidential Primary set for January 31, Adu, also aspiring for the Wenchi Constituency chairmanship slot of the NPP in the Bono Region, said: “As a political party we can only build our prospects if we have dynamic individuals like Amb Boateng, who has an excellent relationship with the party grassroots.”
He indicated that the various polling stations and constituencies remained the strong pillars of the NPP, saying, “The party therefore requires leadership that the grassroots people can easily approach and interact with.”
Adu, also a former youth organiser of the NPP in the Wenchi Constituency and a former Assembly Member of the Atoase Electoral Area, stressed that: “We can’t go to the polls and just pick some leaders to lead the party if we are truly prepared and desire to regain political power.”
He said: “Presently, the youth of our great party are yearning for and require leaders who understand the dynamism in modern politics. Amb Boateng understands and knows how we can leverage our exuberance to rebuild our party for the next General Election.”
Adu noted with worry that bad leadership, which sidelined and neglected the party’s grassroots support base, cost the NPP dearly in the 2024 Election, and warned that it would be politically suicidal for the party in the next General Election if the NPP failed to elect leaders like “Amb Boateng, who understands the youth better.”
Responding to canvassing for votes for Amb Boateng, Adu stated that as a business executive and a former diplomat, the aspirant had positively impacted NPP governance systems and government policies as well.
“In fact, he was the Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) from December 2021 to November 2023, until his appointment as envoy to China,” Adu stated.
SIGA was established by an Act of Parliament, Act 990, to ensure efficiency and profitability in state-owned enterprises while promoting good corporate governance.
