Far East POW talk

MEG Parkes will give an illustrated talk entitled VJ 80th Anniversary – Far East POW and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine at Upton Library this Wednesday (October 8), at 2.30pm.

Meg explained: “As thousands of British Far East POW survivors returned in late 1945 to homes scattered across the north of England, many were suffering from a range of tropical illnesses.

“Some sought the help of doctors at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). The School continued to care for these men until the late 1990’s with veterans and doctors forming a unique medical and scientific collaboration.

“This resulted in several significant medical research studies over the years that informed both tropical and military medical knowledge.

“In the talk I highlight the inspirational work done in captivity by medical officers and orderlies and the skilled craftsmen among the POW who, working closely together, strived to keep men alive in appalling conditions. “It is a remarkable history of extraordinary medical ingenuity as evidenced in the secret documentary artwork done during captivity that medical historians at LSTM have researched over the past 15 years.”

There is no charge to attend the talk but donations can be made to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Places must be booked via wirrallibraries.eventbrite.co.uk
