Nissan to Discontinue Sub-$30K LEAF EV by 2026

Nissan has announced a significant change regarding its LEAF electric vehicle lineup for 2026. The company has decided to discontinue its plans for a sub-$30,000 entry-level trim of the popular LEAF EV. This decision reflects ongoing shifts in the electric vehicle (EV) market and consumer demand.

Nissan LEAF: Key Features for 2026

The 2026 Nissan LEAF S+ will be available at a starting price of $29,990. When factoring in destination fees, the total comes to approximately $31,485. This pricing positions the LEAF as one of the most affordable electric vehicles in the U.S., alongside competitors like the 2027 Chevy Bolt, which starts at $28,995.

LEAF Specifications

* Battery: All 2026 LEAF models feature a 75 kWh battery.

* Driving Range: The range varies from 259 to 303 miles, depending on the trim.

Trims and Pricing

Originally, Nissan had intended to introduce a more affordable S trim featuring a 52 kWh battery and a less powerful electric motor with 174 horsepower. However, a spokesperson confirmed that this smaller-battery variant will not be available for the 2026 model year. The company will continue to evaluate future battery configurations as per market demand.

Market Trends and Impact

The decision to drop the cheaper LEAF variant reflects larger trends affecting the automotive industry. Changes in government policies, particularly the removal of the $7,500 federal tax credit, have compelled automakers like Nissan to reassess their EV offerings. This has resulted in delayed plans or the cancellation of emerging models, such as Kia’s EV4 sedan.

Nissan now faces increased competition, as several manufacturers, including Ford, Rivian, and Volkswagen, are racing to launch their own affordable electric vehicles. The LEAF remains crucial to Nissan’s strategy for regaining a foothold in the EV market, but the company will need to adapt effectively to maintain its competitive edge.
