NIN registration key to effective planning, implementation of govt policies – Oghenesivbe – Businessday NG

Latimore Oghnesivbe, director-general of the Delta State Bureau of Orientation and Communications, has expressed the readiness of the bureau to collaborate with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in carrying out sensitization and awareness programmes in all the wards of the state, saying that NIN Registration is an effective key to planning and implementation of government policies and programmes to the citizens of the state and country.

He also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the mandate given to the commission.

Speaking when Grace Robinson, Delta State coordinator of NIMC and her team paid him an advocacy visit in his office at Asaba, Oghnesivbe noted that NIN registration would not only be beneficial to the federal government but also to state governments as it would be used for a lot of things including security purposes.

“NIN is so important this day that it is becoming even our tax ID, that once you are registered under NIN, government is now able to capture you, and be able to plan for the number of persons in the country.

“It also helps us as a state because His Excellency, the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will also require this type of data to work because every state will have its own data. And these data will also enable government too to plan.”

He noted that although the programme is an effort of the federal government it is a collective collaboration because it would benefit both the federal and state governments, adding, “It will enable us as a state to know the number of persons we have.

According to him, the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori was deeply concerned about the welfare of Deltans and wants to know the actual figure of people in the state to ensure the spread of development and the spread of social welfare services like D-Cares programme and others.

The figures, he said, would enable the governor to effectively plan.

Thus, the DG appealed to the management of NIMC to look at the possibility of developing NIN card in such a way that it will have sufficient space for background information to be captured in the card, not just for the numerical purposes but for security and other purposes.

He expressed hope that with the initiatives and reforms being implemented by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, the country would soon become the pride of all Nigerians.

Grace Robinson, Delta State Coordinator of the NIMC had earlier disclosed that the advocacy visit was aimed at informing the bureau about the forthcoming National Identification Number registration slated to commence on January 19, 2026, and that the exercise would be for initial period of six weeks, after which it might be extended.

She stressed that the registration was for those from zero years to infinity who have not registered previously, revealing that President Tinubu had given the commission mandate to go from ward to ward to register those yet to be captured for NIN.

“This time, we are going into villages, riverine areas, everywhere to register people for NIN, those who have not registered before, she informed, and called for the collaboration of the bureau in sensitizing Deltans on the importance of NIN registration and the need for the residents to embrace the exercise.

She explained that the exercise would be carried out in collaboration with their trained agents and partners just as she disclosed that so far over 177 million Nigerians had been registered.

“This registration is for those that have not registered before because by now, most Nigerians have gotten their NIN. We don’t want somebody that has registered before, maybe because he lost his NIN, he will come and repeat the registration. No. Both children from Zero years to infinity, should come and do this registration”, Robinson stated.
