Nigeria’s NASD OTC Securities Exchange is set to make a groundbreaking move by launching a digital securities platform in collaboration with Block Station, a Canadian FinTech company. This initiative marks a significant step towards leveraging blockchain technology to enhance efficiency in capital markets and stimulate capital formation in Nigeria. Jai Waterman, the Co-Founder of Block Station, emphasized the impact of this partnership on streamlining processes for both issuers and investors alike.

Waterman underscored the importance of simplifying the issuance process for assets such as real estate, equity, debt instruments, and mortgages. By enabling digital assets to be denominated in Naira, local investors can easily participate in the platform while also attracting foreign investors who may opt to invest in their respective local currencies. The potential influx of foreign capital into Nigeria’s market presents exciting investment opportunities for both local and international investors.

The market’s long-term potential is immense, with streamlined processes expected to attract a wave of issuers to NASD OTC. This move not only expands the scope for companies to raise capital publicly but also enhances accessibility for investors through seamless onboarding processes. Waterman highlighted the automation of compliance measures to ensure investor protection, such as setting limits on retail investors’ participation in assets.

Despite the promising prospects, investor skepticism remains a valid concern. Addressing this, Waterman emphasized the robust regulatory framework in place, with NASD being regulated by the SEC and broker dealers ensuring compliance with capital market standards. The use of blockchain technology further enhances transparency and security, instilling confidence in investors through comprehensive disclosure requirements and oversight.

The launch of the digital securities platform represents a groundbreaking development in Nigeria’s capital markets, offering a transformative approach to investment opportunities. By fostering a conducive environment for issuers and investors, NASD OTC sets a new standard for capital market efficiency and investor protection in the digital era.
