Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, Chairman, the Senate Committee on Public Procurement, has called on Nigeria to adopt international best practices in public procurement to enhance transparency, accountability, and value for money.
Delivering an opening remark at the Retreat for Public Procurement on Global Regulations and International Best Practices, organized by his committee on Thursday at the Fraizer Suites, the Senator emphasized that public procurement is a critical tool for transforming government policies into tangible development outcomes.
He identified three key pillars of effective public procurement systems: transparency and disclosure, competition and value for money, and accountability and compliance. Ipinsagba noted that Nigeria’s Public Procurement Act 2007 marked a significant step towards institutionalizing these principles, but acknowledged that there is still room for improvement.
The Senator highlighted priority areas for reform, including digitization, capacity building, independent oversight, and international collaboration. He urged stakeholders to work towards making Nigeria’s public procurement system a model of transparency and efficiency, in line with President Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
Dr. Ipinsagba assured that the Senate Committee on Public Procurement remains committed to legislative oversight and policy advocacy to strengthen integrity and compliance in the procurement system.
