NFT firms are actively building to recover from the “NFT winter” by pivoting from speculative digital art toward real-world utility, gaming, and brand integration. In a significant step for the development of its crypto and NFT ecosystem, Yuga Labs, best known for its Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), has announced the acquisition of a creator platform from the British company, Improbable.
In a December 26 blog post, Greg Solano, the co-founder of Yuga Labs, confirmed that he and his company have acquired the Unreal Engine platform. Unreal Engine is a powerful, real-time 3D creation tool developed by Epic Games for building games, films, simulations, and interactive experiences. Known for its high-fidelity graphics and physics, it uses C++ and Blueprints visual scripting to power industry-standard productions across consoles, PC, and mobile.
Unreal Engine is a product from Improbable, a British technology company founded in 2012 that specializes in distributed simulation software, metaverse infrastructure, and virtual world development. It enables massive, complex, real-time simulations for games, defence, and enterprise, focusing on connecting communities and economies through advanced technology. It’s free to use for learners and creators, with a 5% royalty fee on gross revenue only after a project earns its first $1 million USD.
In his post on X, the Yuga Labs executive described the Unreal Engine acquisition as a significant step towards creating the best platform for creators in the crypto space.” This is a doubling down on our simple mission: build the best creator platform in crypto. A place where anyone can create worlds, games, and experiences that are massively multiplayer, composable, and launch-ready with one click,” he explained.
Established in 2021, Yuga Labs is a prominent Web3 and blockchain technology company best known for creating the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection. It focuses on digital collectibles, gaming, and the metaverse (Otherside), with a valuation exceeding $4 billion. It aims to blend the digital culture with blockchain technology through storytelling, community engagement, and immersive experiences.
Even though much of the information about the deal is not disclosed, the agreement includes obtaining a perpetual license for Improbable’s high-concurrency technology for the Otherside, as well as the transition of many engineers and developers from Improbable to Yuga Labs in the new year. The acquisition will allow Yuga Labs to fully integrate the technology in-house, accelerate iterations, and invest long-term in Otherside and its creators.
The acquisition news has sparked enthusiasm in the crypto community. Many users on X have expressed optimism about the future of Otherside and the entire metaverse ecosystem. In 2025, the metaverse market grew by over 20%, with a focus on Web3 games and decentralized economies. The Unreal Engine acquisition could strengthen Yuga’s position against competitors like Decentraland or The Sandbox.
