MAKURDI: An international Development Consultant, Dr. James Zasha, has called on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria to step in amidst athe lleged confusion that surrounds the introduction of the new tax law, to provide clarity, and educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities.
He, however, explained that while the role of CSs should be seen to be complementary to that of government efforts in promoting sustainable development and good governance, he stressed that CSOs occupy strategic positions within the social contract between government and citizens.
Dr Zasha further advised that while advocating in support of government policies, CSOs must also empower citizens to demand accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery.
The Development Consultant who made the call during the unveiling of the 20th Anniversary Logo of Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiatives, held in Makurdi, used the recently introduced tax law as an example, adding that the public confusion over its provisions highlights the need for CSOs to step in and save the day.
He encouraged civil society organizations to consistently leave a positive legacy and commended Community Links for its twenty years of impactful service to humanity.
Earlier, the Country Lead and Executive Director, Community Links, Dr. Helen Teghtegh, reflected on the organization’s journey, noting that the last two decades have provided opportunities to contribute meaningfully to societal development.
She also highlighted key achievements, including the adoption of the INEC framework for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), voting, and the implementation of a Safeguarding Policy for humanitarian interventions by the Benue State Government.
The ceremony also witnessed the presentation of a ₦300,000 matching grant to a widows’ Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) group after the successful management of an initial ₦50,000 inception grant over twelve months.
Delivering their goodwill messages, the Benue State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BESEMA), Bureau of International Development and Cooperation, and the CSOs in the state congratulated Community Links on its 20th anniversary and pledged continued collaboration.
