New Strike Disrupts Taxi Services in Athens for 2 Days | Sada Elbalad

Taxi services across the Greater Athens area will be suspended for two days this week as drivers stage a new strike in protest against government policies and rising competition in the transport sector.

According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, taxi operations in Athens will be halted on Tuesday and Wednesday, with drivers launching another coordinated walkout.

The strike is expected to cause widespread disruption for commuters and visitors in the capital.

The Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union is protesting the timeline for the transition to electric vehicles, as well as competition from other transport service providers.

The union is also demanding tax exemptions and permission for taxis carrying passengers to use public transport lanes on Athens’ congested roads.

The union, which has organized a series of strikes in recent weeks, is planning a protest march through central Athens on Tuesday morning, ending near the office of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Taxi drivers in Thessaloniki are also expected to take part in a similar strike.

The dispute comes amid Greece’s push toward a green transition. Under new government regulations, all newly licensed taxis from the beginning of 2026 are required to be electric.

The Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union is calling for the deadline to be extended by several years, arguing that the transition places an excessive financial burden on drivers.

Union leaders have also expressed anger over what they describe as unfair advantages granted by the Ministry of Transport to competing services operating zero-emission vehicles that provide passenger transport.
