Nets Already Annoyed With Michael Porter Jr.’s Comments

Michael Porter Jr. wears a Brooklyn Nets uniform for the first time

The Brooklyn Nets made a major offseason move by trading Cameron Johnson for Michael Porter Jr. and a future first-round draft pick. Denver Nuggets management had been eager to move Porter Jr. and added more pieces in the process, including Jonas Valanciunas and Bruce Brown, to strengthen their depth. Brooklyn hopes Porter Jr. can either develop into a long-term piece or raise his trade value to acquire more assets down the line.

However, Porter Jr. is already making headlines for off-court reasons. The forward has stirred controversy with comments made during streams and interviews with popular personalities to make him a polarizing figure to new fans. Nets General Manager Sean Marks confirmed to beat writer Lucas Kaplan that they’ve spoken to him about dialing it back:

“Those conversations that myself and (the) group have had with Michael will remain internal. I think this is, as Jordi alluded to, a new environment for him: a new market, new expectations, new roles, both on the court and in the locker room for him.”

Porter Jr.’s summer of controversial remarks feels like a ticking time bomb in a massive New York market, especially for a rebuilding team trying to avoid distractions. Marks implied that Brooklyn wants to minimize off-court drama as they enter the season.

One of the key takeaways from Sean Marks’ media day comments about Porter Jr. was the contrast between markets. Marks stressed that things that might go unnoticed in a smaller market like Denver will become magnified under the New York media spotlight.

“Porter Jr. knows where the organization stands on certain issues and topics, and you know, this market is a little different than where he was,” Marks explained when giving further explanations about why he spoke to the newcomer. The Nets are banking on Porter Jr. having a strong season to help secure a brighter future, one way or another.

With preseason around the corner, the expectation is that Porter Jr. will shift his focus back to basketball rather than building his profile through popular streaming appearances. Fellow NBA star Trae Young said he expects Porter to average 25 points per game this season.

Few franchises have dealt with more public-relation headaches in recent years than the Nets. Kyrie Irving became a lightning rod for controversy with stories ranging from refusing the mandated vaccine, to serving a suspension for sharing offensive links, to missing games during the pandemic for family gatherings.

Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Ben Simmons all drew criticism for their business decisions and off-court stories. Through it all, Marks and the Brooklyn front office have had to learn that balancing star power with stability is a tricky middle ground in today’s NBA climate.

Now, Porter Jr. is presenting challenges before even playing his first game. The Nets are early into a rebuild, and their tolerance for distractions is far lower than in past eras. If he’s already being warned about his outspoken comments, it signals that off-court antics won’t fly for long in Brooklyn.
