Parents of Nduli Primary School learners in Ceres are seeking placement for their children after the school building was deemed unsafe. Learners have been out of class since October due to infrastructure issues. The Western Cape Education Department’s proposal of afternoon classes at a nearby school was rejected. The department is working on a temporary solution, potentially using mobile classrooms, but a timeline remains uncertain.
Parents of learners from Nduli Primary School in Ceres are demanding that their children be placed at schools in the surrounding area. The learners have been out of class since October last year, after the school building was declared unfit due to aging infrastructure.
The Western Cape Education Department proposed temporarily accommodating the learners at nearby Ligcinga Zethu Senior Secondary from 1 PM to 6 PM, but parents have rejected the idea. SGB secretary Sive Pele says it is still unclear when the learners will return to school, while the department advised it is working on a temporary solution. “They said that we need to wait, hoping that it will be done as soon as possible. So we don’t know when the learners will be back at school.”Pele says teachers were ordered to evacuate the building at a meeting on Wednesday. She says department officials left the meeting, saying it would apply to mobile classes to move the children by March. “They did agree verbally in that meeting yesterday that they would go and try to find mobiles, apply for the mobiles, it usually takes about a month, apply for the mobiles, and ensure that the erection of those mobiles is done.”
