NCC urges media to shape accurate, data-driven telecom narratives

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has emphasised the critical role of media reporting in shaping public understanding and national discourse on telecommunications in Nigeria.

Speaking on January 28 during the presentation of the NCC’s quarterly industry network performance reports, Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, acknowledged that media coverage significantly influences investor confidence, consumer trust, and policy direction.

“It influences how Nigerians understand the technologies that power their daily lives,” she said.

Mrs. Ukoha stressed that informing the public, guiding national conversations, and shaping narratives are essential to the health and sustainability of the telecommunications sector.

She noted that the NCC’s commitment to accountability and transparency, backed by a data-driven approach, requires accurate and well-interpreted communication of its findings.

“Part of this commitment is the drive to generate accurate, transparent, and timely data. Consequently, we have the responsibility to ensure that this data is properly understood, well‑interpreted, and correctly communicated to the Nigerian public,” she said, adding that media partners are indispensable to achieving this goal.

The presentation aimed to deepen journalists’ understanding of the NCC’s quarterly performance data, equipping them with insights to integrate findings into reporting. Mrs. Ukoha urged media practitioners to adopt “constructive framing,” which highlights sector progress alongside challenges, showcases solutions, reflects investments and innovations, and recognizes improvements in service quality.

“Our quarterly performance reports provide rich material for daily news coverage, feature stories, data‑driven investigative reporting, background analysis for interviews, and sector monitoring dashboards used by your newsrooms,” she said.

Mrs. Ukoha concluded by underscoring the NCC’s collaborative approach: “As we present the Q4 Industry Performance Reports today, we do so in the spirit of collaboration. We look forward to meaningful engagements, thoughtful questions, and impactful stories that reflect the realities of our industry, its challenges, its victories, and its future.”

The NCC’s call comes as the telecommunications sector continues to grow rapidly, with expanding infrastructure, rising data demand, and increasing innovation shaping how Nigerians communicate, work, and access information.
