Narrogin’s incumbent shire president has been elected unopposed to the top job for the second time, as four candidates vie for the three vacant spots on the council alongside him.
With no competitors for his job, Leigh Ballard was declared Narrogin’s shire president for another four-year term by WA Electoral Commission returning officer Carly Smith at the close of nominations on September 4.
The local businessman has been on the council since 2011, first serving as mayor of the town of Narrogin in 2013, and as president since its conversion to a shire.
He was also elected to his post unopposed in 2021.
Crs Clive Bartron, Murray Fisher and Roxanne McNab have all thrown their hats in the ring for another term on the council, and will be joined on the October 18 ballot by newcomer Courtney Wright.
Having been involved with the council for almost 20 years, Cr Bartron said he would continue to improve the “built, social and cultural fabric” of the shire, and had recently completed a road intersection audit to increase safety.
Cr Fisher reflected on his decade on the job in his nomination, noting he would promote a “balanced approach” without personal agenda.
Finishing her first four-year term, Cr McNab said she would continue advocating for tourism, heritage and values alongside her work on community groups such as Townscape, Community Builders, and the Narrogin Chamber of Commerce.
Ms Wright, who works as a veterinarian, said she would champion water security, animal health, education, aged care and health among other things if elected to represent the community.
Shire chief executive Dale Stewart thanked the prospective councillors for putting their hands up, and congratulated Mr Ballard on his re-appointment.
“Local government relies on dedicated community members putting their hands up to serve,” he said.
“We congratulate president Ballard on his re-election, and thank all candidates who have nominated to serve as councillors.”
Successful candidates will join Mr Ballard, deputy president Graham Broad, and Crs Tim Wiese, Josh Pomykala on the Narrogin council.
