Skills: AI skills come in all forms and levels. The depth of skills will determine a candidate’s match in cybersecurity, for instance. The breadth of skills or certifications across a series of applications is another.
Familiarity with using AI tools is a stepping stone to generative AI, leading to agentic AI. Each higher level of competence brings a new level of opportunity. AI skills are beginning to take priority over those candidates with professional-experience only.
Another subtlety to be considered is that hiring companies will usually gravitate to candidates with specific AI skills and tools they are using or wanting to adopt, over a candidate with greater depth of experience with AI. If you can be a mentor to train others, your value increases.
Proof: One other thing is different now than a year or two ago — hiring organizations want to see the potential of a candidate before they commit to a hire. Testing candidates is part of the hiring process. Using AI coding assistants such as Copilot, Claude or Cursor is normal. Other tests are designed to assess the fundamental knowledge along with specific language or programs inherent in the work itself.
Even sales staff may be asked to demonstrate their skills as they would be required for customers and within their own organization if hired. Companies are paying a premium for AI-skilled talent and want to be sure the return-on-investment is secure.
