Mutharika Assembles Experienced Team to Revive Malawi’s Economy and Strengthen Governance Malawi 24 | Latest News from Malawi

The new administration blends seasoned civil servants and dynamic political figures as President Arthur Peter Mutharika moves to stabilise the nation.

Newly elected Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced a team of experienced officials and political leaders to guide his administration through a period of economic recovery and institutional reform.

The appointments, viewed as both strategic and inclusive, come as the President charts a bold strategy to rescue Malawi’s ailing economy from the hyperinflation and fiscal distress inherited from the previous Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration led by President Lazarus Chakwera

The appointments include Dr. Justin Saidi as Chief Secretary to the Government, Stuart Naison Ligomeka as Deputy Chief Secretary, Kiswell Dakamau as Director of Chief Residences, Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana as Second Vice President, and Alfred Gangata as Minister of State.

The President’s selections bring together senior civil servants with long records of professional service and emerging political figures with strong grassroots connections. According to analysts, the combination reflects a deliberate attempt to balance administrative experience with new leadership energy.

Dr. Saidi, Ligomeka, and Dakamau are expected to anchor policy execution and strengthen coordination within the civil service, while Chihana and Gangata will add political depth and regional insight to the executive team.

Observers have noted that Chihana’s presence in the presidency enhances representation from the Northern Region, while Gangata’s appointment introduces a youthful and entrepreneurial dimension to the cabinet.

“They have all served in government with unquestionable integrity, diligence, and respect for public office. Their loyalty to service delivery is remarkable,” said Mabvuto Bamusi told Malawi News Agency (MANA)

According to Bamusi, appointing individuals who have been in the government system for long helps preserve institutional memory and ensures continuity in the execution of government policies and administrative reforms.

“The President has demonstrated that governance is about capacity and competence. Choosing career civil servants promotes efficiency and reduces the politicisation of key government functions,” he continued.

The appointments come at a critical moment as Mutharika devise efforts and strategies to stabilise the Malawi’s ailing economy as left out by his predecessor and advance development programmes that would uplift the country from hyper inflation.

Several other commentators agree with Bemusi who believes that Mutharika’s move signals a focus on performance, accountability, and national unity as key drivers of his administration’s agenda.
