The Mumbai Police has issued a strict directive prohibiting its officers and staff from posting reels, mini-vlogs, or any other videos on social media while in uniform. The decision comes after it was observed that sensitive information related to office premises, government vehicles, equipment, and official duties was inadvertently appearing in such videos.

On February 19, 2026, Special Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Dattatray Kamble issued a circular to nearly 51,000 police personnel across the city. The Social Media Lab, which functions under his supervision, has been instructed to closely monitor such activities. The circular clearly states that disciplinary action will be initiated against any personnel found creating or posting videos in uniform.

According to the circular, such posts pose a risk of breaching departmental confidentiality and could adversely affect the image and discipline of the police force. Senior inspectors of the Social Media Lab have been directed to immediately submit reports if any such incidents are detected.

In July 2025, the Maharashtra government had issued a Government Resolution outlining guidelines for social media use by government employees. As per the rules, employees must maintain separate personal and official social media accounts, avoid accessing banned websites, and refrain from using official designations, logos, office addresses, or government property on personal accounts. Uploading confidential documents without prior permission is strictly prohibited. The resolution also bars government employees from criticising government policies or using social media for self-promotion.

Meanwhile, some police personnel within the Mumbai Police have gained significant popularity on social media as “reel stars.” Among them, police constable Amol Kale has drawn attention for creating videos with Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh and actresses Nora Fatehi and Malaika Arora. However, senior officials have clarified that the new order will curb such practices going forward.
