MOSCOW, Idaho — Moscow Police released a website with documents detailing the timeline from the night of the four murders to more than two years of investigations leading to Kohberger’s sentencing today.
Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Kaylee Goncalves were murdered on November 13, 2022. Now, what once were sealed documents detailing the events leading up to Kohberger’s sentencing are being released.
The night of the murders, documents show Kohberger came into the victims’ home through the back door. Court documents write that one of the victims was hiding in the bathroom in the home and heard a man’s voice say, “It’s okay. I’m going to help you,” but not in a nice way.
Court documents reveal Xana suffered from more than 50 stab wounds and Kaylee suffered from more than 20. They write Kaylee’s face was unrecognizable when police arrived on the scene.
After gathering evidence of “large footprints” and DNA evidence of a knife sheath, police arrested Bryan Kohberger six weeks after the murders. Court documents go on to write interviews with inmates at Latah County Jail who shared space with Kohberger.
One described him as intelligent and polite, but with habits like staying up all night and washing his hands multiple times a day.
Hundreds of investigation reports are released, but thousands more are still sealed. Moscow Chief of Police Anthony Dalinger says while the court goes through remaining sealed documents to eventually be made public, he says some may never be made public.
“I hope everybody can understand the immense amount of information in this investigation is going to take time to prepare,” said Dalinger. “It has to be gone through legally to be redacted or figure out if it can be released.”
Judge Steven Hippler said last week that the process will take months, if not longer. We’re still combing through the investigation records posted today.
