Re-elected veteran councillor Greg Boland wants to see him and his colleagues more closely involved in the Shire’s Safer Speeds Trial with the RAC.
The program which was fully funded by the insurer has seen a raft of cuts to speed limits on local government roads across the district.
Some of the changes were well-received, but many were not, he said.
“(There is) quite a lot of positive feedback, especially about residential roads. (There is also) quite a lot of negative feedback, particularly about certain non-residential roads where people believe the speed limit has reduced too much,” Cr Boland said.
The councillor said he had already discussed the trial directly with RAC representatives.
The process to date was largely driven by Shire officers and the RAC, but given the feedback from residents, Cr Boland said it was a good idea to have greater councillor scrutiny.
Shire president Julia Jean-Rice reiterated a review would be undertaken after the first 12 months of the trial, then again at the end of three years.
“Councillors were regularly briefed prior to the decision and before implementation and had the opportunity to engage and make an informed decision,” she said.
“Once the trial was implemented, it became operational. However, councillors will have the opportunity to be involved again as part of the 12-month review.”
