Monex Group Plans Yen-Pegged Stablecoin to Expand Digital Finance Strategy

Monex plans a yen-pegged stablecoin backed by government bonds to enhance global payments and expand its digital finance presence.

Monex Group is considering launching a yen-pegged stablecoin. Chairman Oki Matsumoto shared this in a recent interview with TV Tokyo. He said issuing such a stablecoin would require strong planning and significant capital. However, he emphasized that Monex had to act now in order to remain ahead in the changing financial world.

As reported by Matsumoto, Japanese government bonds would be the support of the stablecoin. It would be pegged at 1:1 to the yen. This provides stability and confidence, particularly in cross-border payments and company transactions.

Monex assumes that the financial transfer around the globe can be enhanced with the help of stablecoins. In contrast to other cryptocurrencies, the stablecoins are pegged to fiat currencies. This renders them less volatile. They also permit 24/7 trading and instant international remittances, frequently at very low charges.

Monex will leverage the customer bases of Coincheck and Monex Securities to support the stablecoin. The two are group subsidiaries. Coincheck is a Japanese crypto exchange, and Monex Securities is a famous brokerage house.

The action is undertaken when the stablecoin activity in Japan and outside of Japan is on the rise. The Genius Act was enacted in July by the United States. The act provides legality to stablecoins that are based on the U.S. dollar and promotes their demand. As a result, Japan begins to authorize stablecoin projects.

Recently, the Financial Services Agency approved a startup in Japan, marking the first such approval in the country. It is now able to issue a Japanese-pegged stablecoin. Simultaneously, such large financial organizations as SBI Holdings and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation declared the plans of stablecoins.

The move by Monex to enter this space indicates that the company does not want to be left behind. Matsumoto thinks that stablecoins are the new direction in digital finance. He believes the company must move quickly; otherwise, it risks being left behind.

Besides the stablecoin project, Monex is intending to go international. Matsumoto showed that the company is in the process of buying a cryptocurrency company in Europe. Saying that an announcement would come in a few days, he said.

The target is a company that revolves around blockchain technology. Monex would like to accomplish this deal to enhance its international presence. Monex was the company to listed Coincheck on the Nasdaq stock exchange last year. This added resources to the company to expand.

The strategy of Matsumoto is obvious. First, he has intentions of expanding to foreign markets by purchasing strategic crypto assets. After that, he will allocate the same resources and experiences to expand the domestic business. He feels that this two-step strategy will enable Monex to be distinguished from Japanese competitors.

Digital assets present a great opportunity for the company. It feels that the yen-backed stablecoin will not only satisfy rising demand, but it will also enhance the market standing of Monex. The strategy is also geared towards inflation and depreciation of currency.

Monex would like to have a dominant role in Japan as it develops an enhanced regulation system of stablecoins. Its activities might serve as an example to other companies. This move will make Japan a leader in digital finance in case it is successful. In addition, the monthly developments of the stablecoin strategy of Monex will be monitored by the financial sector in the coming months. The result would have implications for the future of stablecoins in Japan and elsewhere.
