Following the firing of Sherrone Moore, the Wolverines promoted Biff Poggi to interim head coach while the program began its national coaching search. On Dec. 26, Michigan named former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham to become Moore’s permanent replacement.
Poggi reportedly had multiple interviews for the head coaching gig. Poggi, 65, was in his third stint at Michigan. He served as the head coach of Charlotte in 2023 and 2024 before taking over as the associate head coach of the Wolverines this season.

Poggi went 2-0 with Michigan as the active head coach during the regular season when Moore was serving a two-game suspension.
Per Zach Shaw of CBS Sports, Poggi revealed he will not join Whittingham’s staff with Michigan for 2026.
“Tthis isn’t a rebuild at all,” Poggi said of where Michigan is before the 2026 campaign. “That would shortchange the kids, and coach Whittingham is going to do an amazing job.”
Earlier in December, Poggi stated he wanted the head coaching job and knew how to lead the Wolverines. After Witthingham was hired, Poggi expressed his support for the new head coach.
“Michigan Football is in GREAT hands under Kyle Whittingham!!!!” Poggi wrote. “Proven winner, true gentleman, tough-nosed Michigan coach of days gone by. Great hire by Warde Manuel. The kids will love him. Exciting days ahead for Michigan. We have work to do over the next five days. Texas is excellent. Go Blue.”
Poggi went 2-1 this season as head coach. The Wolverines finished the campaign with a 9-4 overall record and finished 7-2 in Big Ten play. Poggi is 6-16 as a head coach at the college level.
