
HCC hosts RTTC open house tonight
WATERLOO — Hawkeye Community College will host a public open house on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. to showcase its newly expanded Regional Transportation Training Center at 6433 Hammond Ave.
Originally opened in 2012, the RTTC features an open driving range featuring a 26-foot-wide road with inclines and turns. The expansion added an additional 7,456 square feet to the main building, which includes drive-through truck bays, classrooms, and virtual driving simulator labs.
Iowa Workforce Development projects the need for drivers is 10,000 annually through the year 2032. The expansion will increase Hawkeye’s capacity to train truck drivers by 25%, helping the college address the critical need for truck drivers.
Hawkeye offers a wide range of driver education and certification programs, including commercial driver’s license and specialty training, motorcycle and moped courses, bus licensing, and driver improvement for both teens and adults. WATERLOO — The Grout Museum District and Veterans Memorial Hall will hold a program to celebrate the city’s WWII history.
The “Honoring Waterloo’s WWII Heritage” program will commemorate the ending of WWII and the city’s WWII Heritage City designation Sept. 6.
A presentation will begin at 10:45 a.m. at the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum, followed by a presentation at the Veterans Memorial Hall where attendees will learn more about a space for the designation and honor Black Hawk County’s fallen veterans.
Historic vehicles and reenactors will be on display all day at Veterans Memorial Hall.

Waterloo announces Labor Day hours
WATERLOO — The city of Waterloo offices will be closed Monday for Labor Day.
This will affect waste collection services.
Monday garbage routes will be picked up with Tuesday routes. No other collection days are affected.
All recycling routes will run one day later than usual. Monday routes will be picked up on Tuesday. Friday recycling will be picked up Saturday.
There will be no curbside yard waste collection. Monday and Tuesday bulk item pickups will be canceled. Items must be rescheduled for the following week.
