Film earns $7M opening weekend despite critics’ scorn, with 72% female viewers over 45 driving conservative political participation in theaters
A documentary film highlighting the life of Melania Trump, the wife of U.S. President Donald Trump, has achieved record-breaking revenue in North American theaters, proving its strong political and economic ripple effects. Mainstream film critics responded coldly to the work’s artistic merit. However, large numbers of Republican supporters and middle-aged women flocked to theaters, forming a social syndrome that transcends mere consumption of visual content. Experts evaluated that the unique symbolism of Melania as a figure, combined with sophisticated media strategies, presented a new way for the U.S. media industry to consume politics.
According to the cultural critique magazine Variety on the 2nd (local time), the documentary film *Melania*, released on the 30th of last month, sold approximately 7 million dollars (approximately 10.1 billion Korean won) in tickets in North America alone during its opening weekend. This is the best opening-weekend performance for a non-musical documentary genre in the past decade.
The film was produced by MGM Studios, acquired by Amazon, which invested 40 million dollars in securing distribution rights and an additional 35 million dollars in marketing. The total production and promotion cost amounted to 75 million dollars (approximately 108 billion Korean won). However, major box-office prediction agencies initially forecasted profits to range between 3 million and 5 million dollars, citing the film’s strong partisan nature. This would have been a 4-7% return on investment.
The actual results, however, far exceeded expectations, demonstrating that the purchasing power of audiences oriented toward conservative values was far stronger than mainstream critics’ analyses.
The key driver of the film’s success was identified as middle-aged American women. According to market analysis by Franchise Entertainment Research, 72% of viewers were women, with 83% of them over 45 years old. This is an exceptionally unusual metric considering the mainstream film market’s typical focus on male audiences aged 15 to 44. These women perceived Melania not merely as a political spouse but as a role model embodying their own values. Variety, citing experts, stated, “It is extremely rare for a specific age group of women to lead the success of a documentary. The strong admiration for Melania translated into actual purchasing behavior.”
At a time when antipathy toward President Trump has intensified, the documentary instead served as a political detour. Following recent shootings by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis and elsewhere, some Republican supporters showed fatigue toward content featuring Trump himself.
In contrast, this documentary, with its relatively apolitical narrative focused on the individual and Melania’s maintained image, achieved notable box-office success in regions with strong conservative leanings. Theaters in Florida and Texas, areas with strong Republican support bases, saw overwhelmingly high occupancy rates. The Washington Post (WP) analyzed this phenomenon, stating, “Choosing the public space of a theater instead of watching via streaming platforms itself became a political event for supporters to affirm communal solidarity.”
According to the political media outlet Politico, audiences did not merely come to watch the film. Many dressed in red attire or brought props with supportive slogans, transforming the movie-watching experience from leisure into a display of power and a means of political participation. CNBC remarked, “This film served less as a tool for persuasion and more as a sanctuary for those with firm beliefs to share and reinforce their emotions.”
Critics, however, harshly labeled the film as “an empty promotional video.” Yet, this criticism paradoxically fueled the consolidation of the supporter base. Experts assessed that the psychology of defending the First Lady against mainstream media attacks drove audiences to theaters. The film’s critical failure conversely propelled its commercial success. On the film review site Rotten Tomatoes, the critic freshness rating stood at 9%, while the audience approval rating reached 99%. The film also received an A grade on CinemaScore, which surveys actual moviegoers.
The film industry analyzed Amazon’s 75 million dollar investment not merely as production costs but as strategic expenses to secure conservative audience data and expand political influence. The Hollywood Reporter stated, “This project likely prioritized political dynamics and media influence over immediate financial gains.” The theatrical release was a calculated move to first showcase Amazon’s brand and capabilities, then attract audiences to streaming platforms like Amazon Prime. This is expected to be a representative case of how big tech companies leverage political landscapes in their commercial strategies. The WP evaluated, “The success of *Melania* sets a milestone for how the entertainment industry should combine with political marketing during future election cycles or political turning points.”
