KSU’s northern border area unit crucial in safeguarding community: Kharkamni
NONGPOH, Aug 30: Khasi Students’ Union North Khasi Hills District (KSU-NKHD) president Ferdynald Kharkamni on Saturday said that the organisation’s Northern Border Area unit plays a crucial role in safeguarding the community as it lies along the inter-state boundary with Assam, where issues of illegal influx and border-related concerns persist. He was speaking at a programme held at the conference hall of Moonlight Secondary School, Byrnihat, to formally constitute the new office-bearers of the KSU Northern Border Area unit for the term 2025-2028. During the programme, Kharkamni said that the election of leadership reflects the union’s ongoing commitment to strengthen its presence in strategic border areas. Also addressing the gathering, KSU CEC organising secretary, Raymond Kharjana, urged the newly inducted leaders to be responsible, God-fearing and to uphold dignity in leadership. “When people speak of leaders of the Union, it should be with respect, not with scorn,” he said. He reminded them that serving the union is not an easy task, as it involves facing many challenges, but called upon the youth to remain resilient, courageous, and selfless in the interest of the community’s future. “No battle can be won with just a pen or only a sword — both are needed,” he added, underlining the importance of unity and collective strength in the movement. Kharjana also administered the oath to the newly elected office-bearers, which include Aloysius Lapang (president), Baiaishah Lapang (vice president), Overson Lyngdoh (general secretary), Johnpaul Sohpdang (assistant general secretary), Noblestar Lyngdoh (organising secretary), Maitlynti Klein (assistant organising secretary), Rajesh Shakwa (education secretary), Alex Kharkrang (assistant education secretary), Budlang Kharjahrin (finance secretary) and Comingsoon Lyngdoh (publicity and information secretary), along with 17 members of the Executive Committee.
NEIGRIHMS organises CME on oncologic imaging
SHILLONG, Aug 30: The Department of Radiology, NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, in collaboration with the Society of Oncologic Imaging India (SOII), successfully organised an Outreach Continuing Medical Education (CME) on oncologic imaging at NEIGRIHMS. The academic programme brought together eminent faculty from across the country to deliberate on the latest advancements in cancer imaging and its critical role in diagnosis, staging and treatment planning. Marking a landmark occasion, the event also witnessed the inauguration of the Meghalaya State Chapter of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). National Secretary of IRIA and President of SOII, Dr. Pankaj Sharma, welcomed the new chapter. Veteran radiologist and HOD of Radiology, NEIGRIHMS, Dr. C. Daniela, the newly appointed state chapter president, spoke about the role of IRIA in bringing radiologists together to address local healthcare challenges, foster academic collaboration and advocate for policies in medical imaging in Meghalaya. NEIGRIHMS Director, Dr. Nalin Mehta, who inaugurated the event, said, “Having the CME in NEIGRIHMS is important since a major load of onco-imaging of the state is on the RCC (Regional Cancer Centre), and taking lead is encouraging and benefits all stakeholders.” On the other hand, Dr. Donboklang Lynser, Additional Professor, NEIGRIHMS, said, “The establishment of the IRIA Meghalaya Chapter has been long awaited and is expected to provide a platform for radiologists in the state to collaborate, learn, and contribute actively to the progress of radiological sciences.” Dr. Humsheer S. Sethi, a young Radiology faculty from the proposed Shillong Medical College, has taken charge as secretary of the newly formed body. The inaugural ceremony was attended by distinguished dignitaries from NEIGRIHMS and national representatives of IRIA and SOII. During the programme, speakers highlighted the growing importance of oncologic imaging in the early detection and management of cancers, especially in the Northeast, where cancer prevalence is among the highest in the country. The CME featured lectures, interactive case discussions, and panel sessions covering state-of-the-art imaging modalities such as PET-CT, MRI and advanced CT techniques.
Colourful city event marks Teej fest
SHILLONG, Aug 30: The Hamro Swabhimaan Trust, Shillong unit, organised the Haritalika Teej festival at Gorkha Durga Mandir, Garikhana, bringing together women in a vibrant display of tradition and togetherness. The festival, which holds deep cultural significance, is observed as a celebration of womanhood, marital harmony and devotion. Women clad in red sarees, adorned with their finest jewellery, gathered to mark the occasion with joy and reverence. The red attire, symbolising love and strength, lent a striking aura to the celebrations, while the festive spirit reinforced a strong sense of unity among participants. A fashion show formed the centrepiece of this year’s celebration, where young models highlighted the rich tapestry of Meghalaya’s heritage alongside traditional Indian styles. Complementing the event, a traditional Nepali dance competition was also organised, showcasing talent and preserving the cultural expressions of the community.
2 full-grown bulls stolen in WJH village
JOWAI, Aug 30: Two fully grown bulls belonging to one Hunbait Tyngkan from Saphai village, West Jaintia Hills district, were stolen from the place where they were kept earlier this week. Following the incident, which took place between 1am and 2 am, the owner lodged an FIR at the Saphai Outpost on the same day after discovering that the two bulls were missing from the place known as Mawpyniein. The police have taken the matter seriously and have started an investigation to trace the stolen bulls. Information has also been shared with other police stations to help in tracking down both the bulls and the thieves, if found. Furthermore, the owner has appealed to the general public that if anyone sees or comes across the bulls, they are kindly requested to inform the nearest police station immediately. A reward will be given to those who provide information, and their identity will be kept confidential.
