The National Museum of Ireland is set to host a series of events in the coming weeks. The first of these events will take place on Saturday, October 11, when the Mayo Dark Sky Team will host a free event where attendees can learn about the natural resource. Mayo is working towards becoming an International Dark Sky Reserve. The event will take place between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm and is suitable for all ages.
Learn about cooperage
A live cooperage demonstration by Dair Nua from Foxford will take place from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, October 18. The event will allow attendees to discover the traditional art of cask repair and restoration, and will showcase the tools and techniques involved in the process. The National Folklife Collection will be open for viewing of crafted cooper-made items and the associated tools of the trade. This event is free to the public and does not require booking.
Midterm at the Museum
Halloween celebrations will return this year at the museum from Saturday, October 25 to Sunday, November 2. Young visitors can take part in the Scarecrow Jack Halloween Trail in the woods. A free crafting session will also take place from 2.30pm to 4.30pm from October 29 to 31.
Saturday tours
Each Saturday at 2 pm or 3.30 pm, members of the public can take part in a free guided tour. The tour examines the interesting history of the Fitzgerald family, the historic house built in 1865, and the Victorian gardens and parkland. Tours start at the Museum reception. No booking required. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
