LAHORE: Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has accused former Prime Minister Imran Khan of bringing terrorism and militant groups back to Pakistan, saying the fight against terrorism must start with those who facilitated extremists.
In a strong statement on Saturday, Maryam Aurangzeb said it was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who succeeded in eradicating terrorism from the country, while Imran Khan reversed this progress by supporting and providing safe haven to terrorists.
“Imran Khan is responsible for the return of terrorists and their networks to Pakistan,” she said. “Every Pakistani martyred in terrorist attacks since 2018 is the result of his actions. ”
Maryam said that under Nawaz Sharif’s government, the entire nation was united under a common stand against terrorism through the National Action Plan (NAP), which she described as a “comprehensive and effective strategy” to eliminate extremism.
However, she alleged that Imran Khan violated the National Action Plan and allowed terrorists to regroup, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where she said militants were provided shelter, funding and protection.
“The elimination of terrorism must begin with those who enabled and supported it,” she said. “Imran Khan gave terrorists space to thrive and betrayed the sacrifices of the Pakistani armed forces, police and citizens. ”
Maryam Aurangzeb added that security forces, law enforcers and ordinary citizens, including children, have made immense sacrifices for peace. “By siding with the terrorists, Imran Khan has disrespected the blood of our martyrs and the unity of our nation,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has accused certain elements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) of obstructing peace.
Addressing the media in Lahore, Tarar said the sacrifices of patriotic citizens and Pakistan Army in the fight against terrorism could never be forgotten. He said that under the National Action Plan, Pakistan was committed to eliminating terrorism and the army was successful in defeating the militants. “We cannot forget the martyrs of the Parade Lane mosque attack,” he said, adding that the extremists behind such acts have no connection with Islam.
The minister recalled that under the previous government, terrorist incidents occurred almost daily. He alleged that the founder and leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party often sided with the militants instead of condemning them.
Tarar further claimed that some groups in KP were promoting anarchy and creating obstacles to peace. He accused the provincial government of encouraging smuggling, illegal trade and an underground economy. According to him, illegal activities include unpaid vehicle trading, smuggling of oil, foodstuffs, grains and narcotics.
He alleged that a “smuggling network” was operating in the province with close links between terrorists and PTI officials. “The PTI government in KP benefited financially from these illegal operations,” Tarar said. “The leaders have links to timber, drug and narcotics mafias. However, economic reforms are now tightening the noose around them.”
Tarar added that terrorism in the region is financed by black money earned through smuggling and illegal trade. He claimed that over the past 12 years, the PTI government in KP has benefited from illegal activities, with senior party officials directly involved in these operations and even contributing to Imran Khan’s political financing.
