Through enabling secure, server-side proof generation, Marlin’s Oyster protocol resolves a critical security dilemma hindering the adoption of truly private DeFi, identity, and AI.
The rise of Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proofs has been a defining feature of the modern web, promising a future of scalable and private applications. However, a fundamental paradox has hindered their mainstream adoption: developers have been forced to choose between a poor user experience or a critical security compromise. Today, Marlin’s infrastructure is resolving this dilemma, making performant, truly private ZK applications a practical reality.
The challenge lies in proof generation. Forcing users to generate complex proofs on their own devices (client-side) is slow and resource-intensive. The alternative — delegating the task to powerful cloud servers — requires users to send their private inputs to a third-party machine, creating a major vulnerability.
The solution is a new architectural model for server-side proving, powered by Marlin’s Oyster protocol, a decentralized network of Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). Oyster allows any application to run its code inside a secure, hardware-enforced enclave. This ensures that even the server operator cannot access a user’s private inputs, combining the speed of server-side computation with the confidentiality of client-side execution.
“The promise of ZK has been held back by a practical bottleneck: you could have privacy or you could have performance, but not both at scale,” says Eslikumar Adiandhra, Head of Product at Marlin. “Our goal with the Oyster protocol is to provide the foundational, confidential compute layer that innovators can build upon. We provide the secure infrastructure so that specialized applications can finally deliver on the full promise of ZK without compromise.”
This breakthrough is being showcased by innovative platforms like Kalypso, an independent ZK proof marketplace. Kalypso leverages Marlin’s Oyster network to run its core matching engine and, crucially, to enable its network of provers to generate proofs for users without ever seeing their private data. The user’s sensitive inputs are sent over an encrypted channel directly into an Oyster enclave, the proof is generated inside this “black box,” and only the result is returned.
This model, powered by Marlin’s infrastructure, is a game-changer for a wide range of applications where privacy and integrity are paramount. In Private DeFi, it enables the execution of trades or assessment of creditworthiness without ever revealing a user’s financial history, preserving anonymity while maintaining trust. In the realm of Confidential Identity, it allows for seamless verification of user credentials such as age, residency, or membership, without disclosing any underlying personal information.
Perhaps most compelling is its potential in Secure AI. With Marlin, AI models can run inference directly on private user data, enabling highly personalized experiences without compromising data security. This opens the door to a new class of intelligent applications that are both powerful and privacy-respecting by design.
Through providing the critical infrastructure to solve the private input problem, Marlin is not just optimizing the ZK supply chain — it is unlocking the next generation of applications that rely on practical, performant, and uncompromising privacy.
