ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Despite her strong electoral performances in northwest Georgia’s 14th congressional district in the past, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has faced down some fellow GOP contenders for her seat.

Late Friday, Greene stunned the nation when she announced her resignation from Congress, effective Jan. 5, 2026.

Arguably once President Donald Trump’s staunchest ally in Congress, Greene’s relationship with the now-47th U.S. president has been deteriorating in recent weeks.

Greene was first elected to Congress in 2020 after competing in GOP primary field consisting of John Cowan (who advanced to a runoff with Greene); John Barge; Clayton Fuller; Bill Hembree; Kevin Cooke; Matt Laughridge; Ben Bullock; and Andy Gunther.

On Nov. 3, 2020, Greene defeated Democrat Kevin Van Ausdal.

Two years later, Greene – now the incumbent – was challenged by Jennifer Strahan; Eric Cunningham; James Haygood; Charles Lutin; and Seth Synstelien, all in the Republican primary.

In November 2022, Greene defeated Marcus Flowers, a Democrat.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: This Sunday’s On The Record With Atlanta News First will feature an in-depth look at Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation and its impact on Georgia and the nation. Watch On The Record With Atlanta News First at 11 a.m.

Last year, Greene finally went unopposed in the GOP primary after Republican Luke Farmer withdrew from the race. She later defeated Democrat Shawn Harris in November 2024.

Georgia’s nationally watched midterms in the 2026 primary is May 19, 2026. Gov. Brian Kemp may decide to call for a special election before that date, or could simply let the seat remain vacant until the state’s primary rolls around.
